Since this is the first entry for this blog it would probably make sense to do a little “about this site” post. I’ve been putting it off for a while, and since I can’t very well write a second post without a first, there haven’t been many entries just yet. So, without further ado, here is the who, what, why, and where for this little piece of the web.
Who
My name is Mike. I’ve lived in Chicago or its suburbs for my entire life, and I’m a die hard Cubs and Bears fan. Those teams will get the majority of the coverage on this site. I Graduated from the University of Illinois in 1999 and while I was never a huge fan of college sports I do follow Illini basketball and football occasionally and I’ll write about them every once in a while.
I have two cats named Clark and Addison. I was going to go with Sheffield and Waveland, but it just didn’t quite have the same ring. I buy Old Style beer in the summer and drink it while watching games on the weekend. I make annual payouts to my Sox loving friends when the Sox outperform the Cubs in whatever it is that we bet on that year. For years I’ve been trying to convince my wife that the walls in the third bedroom, the one we can’t decide what color to paint, should be white. With blue stripes. I think I’ve almost convinced her.
What
As I’ve already sort of mentioned this is a sports blog, the focus of which are my favorite Chicago teams, the Cubs and Bears. My goal is to write at least two or three post per week, most of which will be commentary on news about the teams, or analysis of their play. I use the term analysis rather loosely, because if history is any indication it will be me bitching about how much they suck. Hopefully not. Its still spring training right? This could be the year. The Cubs have at least a month before they are mathematically eliminated. Like I said, I don’t have a lot of knowledge on the college sports scene, so there won’t be a lot of focus there, but I’ll keep you in the loop much as possible as far as the Illini go.
What about those other Chicago sports teams? The White Sox are going to get few mentions here. I don’t have anything against them, I just don’t care about them. You know what the funny thing is? I’m surrounded by Sox fans. My brother is a Sox fan, one of my best friends is a Sox fan, most of my coworkers are Sox fans, my wife’s entire family are all Sox fans. There are maybe 50 actual Sox fans in the world, and I think I know all of them. If I have any hatred towards the Sox its because I have to put up with all of their fans.
I don’t follow professional basketball so I don’t really care about the Bulls. In fact, I liked it when they were horrible because that meant the local sports talk shows would focus more on baseball and less on them.
I could probably get into hockey if the Blackhawk’s ownership even remotely cared. When I first got married, my wife and I lived next door to a guy that worked for the Hawks. He would give us tickets all the time. It was the one sport that my wife actually liked. Figures they get locked out for a year and a half, and you can’t see half the games on TV. Unless I go to a game and feel like giving a report, this is the last time I will mention hockey.
Why
So why start a sports blog? Does the world really need another Cubs fan complaining about how bad his team is? Probably not. And while I’ve considered starting this blog for a few years, that is the one thing that stopped me. Well that and I’m lazy. So why now? Well I have a Poker Blog where I occasionally talk about sports. I haven’t been playing poker much lately, and recent legislation is making it more difficult, so my posts over there are becoming less about poker and more about other things. So instead of turning a poker blog into a sports blog with a poker title, I decided to start a new site. And here it is.
Where
Ummmm? On the internet? People may say it’s only a fad, but I think its here to stay.
