Mike’s NFL Picks 2007 Week 1
By Mike | September 5, 2007
Throughout the NFL season I’m going to try to post my NFL picks against the spread. Depending on how lazy I feel I may even include some commentary as to why I pick who I pick. My plan is to post on Wednesday or Thursday but if there aren’t any games until Sunday then I may be lazy and wait until sometime Saturday. The spreads that I’ll be using will be whatever is current on Bodog.com at the time. If the spread changes drastically after I make my picks, too bad.
I should also warn you that I do not bet on sports. I have very little clue as to what I am doing and these picks are for entertainment purposes only. My entertainment in that I can dream about all the money I’d win if I ever decide to bet for real, and your entertainment in that you can laugh when I go 0-16 every other week. Just to reiterate, if I don’t have enough confidence in my picks to put money on them neither should you.
If you do feel like sports gambling try out Fantasy Sports Live. Its perfectly legal because its fantasy sports, and it only lasts one day(week?) so you don’t have to worry about maintaining your team for a whole season. Bonus code POKERWORDS gets you a 20% first deposit bonus too. How can you pass that up?
So without further ado, here are my picks. Teams in Bold are who I choose.
Thursday:
New Orleans Saints +6.5 at Indianapolis Colts - This is a tough call. I think the Colts are going to win, and possibly in easily, but the Saints are a good team and they may keep it close. Its hard to bet against the Colts at home though.
Sunday:
Kansas City Chiefs +3 at Houston Texans - One day the Texans will put together a decent team and cost a lot of sports betters a lot of money. Until they do I’m going to keep betting against them. If the Chiefs are getting three at the Texans I’m liking the Bears chances against them next week.
Denver Broncos -3 at Buffalo Bills - Don’t know much about either of these teams, but I can only name one player on the Bills so they can’t be doing anything too impressive.
Pittsburgh Steelers -5.5 at Cleveland Browns I don’t think the Steelers will be very good this year but I’m pretty sure the Browns are still awefull
Tennessee Titans +6.5 at Jacksonville Jaguars - Jacksonville doesn’t strike me as a high powered offense, but I have a feeling that 17 points will be enough to cover the spread.
Carolina Panthers +1.5 at St. Louis Rams - Are the Rams going to be good again this year? How old is Torry Holt? I’m depending on Steve Smith on my fantasy team so I’ll put all my eggs in one basket and take Carolina.
Philadelphia Eagles -3 at Green Bay Packers - Brett Favre sticking around is one of the worst things that can happen for the Packers, which suits me fine because like any good Bears fan I can’t stand Green Bay. Favre is going to keep them just bad enough to not be a threat to anyone, but just good enough to ensure they don’t get a top 5 draft pick
Atlanta Falcons +3 at Minnesota Vikings - Its going to be a long year for Atlanta.
Miami Dolphins +3 at Washington Redskins - The Skins were supposed to be good last year. I’m not falling for that again.
New England Patriots -6.5 at New York Jets - 6.5 is a lot of points for a road team, but I have a feeling this one is going to be a rout.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers +6 at Seattle Seahawks - 6 points is not so much for a home team when their opponent is Tampa Bay.
Chicago Bears +6.5 at San Diego Chargers - I won’t be completely surprised by a Bears victory, but I don’t have a good feeling about this. The Chargers run the ball, and run the ball well. The Bears Defense is scary but their one weakness is stopping the run. I think LT will break one or two long runs early and then Bad Rex will make a showing as he tries to pull off a come from behind miracle.
Detroit Lions +1.5 at Oakland Raiders - Its the battle of who can suck most. At least one of these teams won’t have to wait most of the season for their first win.
New York Giants +6 at Dallas Cowboy - I think the Cowboys are overrated, but I’ve also been very unimpressed with the New York Football Giants in the past few years. Without Tiki I don’t see them doing much.
Monday:
Baltimore Ravens +3 at Cincinnati Bengals - Good matchup of high powered offense vs dominant defense, but unfortunately for the Ravens they have to play offense too, and the Bengals D is good enough to keep them from scoring more than a few points.
Arizona Cardinals +3 at San Fransisco 49ers - How did this game get on Monday night? The 49ers are an up and coming team and all, but against Arizona? Sure that MNF game against the Bears last year was exciting and all, but I don’t think it deserved a return visit to prime time.

So there are my picks based on Bodog’s lines as of Wednesday evening. I’ll keep a running tally of my record throughout the season. If I finish significantly above 500 maybe I’ll play for real next year.
