    Bears Preseason Game 3

    By Mike | August 26, 2007

I managed to catch the first half of the Bears’ third preseason game last night and if that was any indication of how they are going to perform in the regular season then I can’t wait.    I thought the 49ers were supposed to be getting better, but they didn’t look so good yesterday.  Maybe it was missing Frank Gore that did it, or maybe just the opponent.  Either way things looked good for the Bears.

Grossman looked pretty good yesterday.  It was almost entirely good Rex.  He was making good reads, avoiding forced throws and completing a high percentage of his passes to seven or eight different receivers.    Bad Rex did make a showing though as he botched another snap and threw his third TD pass to the wrong team, but other than that there was nothing to complain about.  The first string offense put up 31 first quarter points.

Meanwhile the defense in the first half was suffocating.  I think the Niners  had one first down, 9 passing yards and 40 something rushing yards in the entire first half.  The time of possession was 2-1 in favor of the Bears.   The only points they gave up came after a fumbled punt gave San Fransisco the ball on the 6 yard line, and an interception that was returned for a touchdown.    It was the Bears defense that Bears fans dream of.  If they stay healthy I don’t see many points getting scored for Bears opponents.

There were a few negatives to take away from the game.  As I mentioned Grossman fumbled a snap again.  He can’t keep doing that.  It is such a basic quarterbacking skill that there is no reason it should be happening with any regularity.  At best it kills drives and at worst it is going to become a season long distraction for the Bears because he is going to be under the microscope and every time he drops a snap there are going to be hundreds of questions for him to answer.  He also threw a touchdown pass to Walt Harris, who hasn’t played for the Bears in many years, and then almost gave up another pick 6 on the same exact play on the next series.

I don’t remember who it was but someone took his eye off the ball and fumbled a punt on the Bears 6 yard line.  He was in, most likely because Deven Hester left earlier with a shoulder injury after a horrible attempt at a block.  I am continually amazed at how despite  the fact that everyone knows Hester is a break away return man and should plan accordingly, he still rips off 30 yard returns like they were nothing.  The expectation isn’t that he gets a few yards, and maybe breaks one for a long gain, its that he break one for a long gain and maybe gets a TD.    When he went down in the first quarter and they cut away to commercial I was already adjusting my expected win total for the Bears this season by a game or two.  He’s that important of a player.

So after watching that game I’m now excited for football season, even if the Cubs are still in the playoff race and I haven’t yet devoted much time to football because of it.
