From the Rooftops

My company has an annual Cubs outing. These event’s are somewhat legendary as they traditionally involved many of our clients and free drinks starting at 10 or 11 AM and going on until the last person dropped. This is only my second year at my job and last year they opted not to do the Cubs outing. The rationale was that they often didn’t get the decision maker types that they wanted to go and the amount of alcohol consumed could present an embarrassing situation for us or our clients, although I’d heard that it was often the clients getting silly drunk first.
This year we went back to the game with just our company. No clients, no family, just a bunch of lushes taking a bus downtown to see a game with an open bar. The hour long rain delay before the game did not help out on the sobriety factor either.
Its not that our whole company is made up drunks, its just that we all know how to have a good time so we made sure to get our money’s worth. And it was cold and rainy so what else were we going to do?
I was actually surprised at how few people watched the game. Yeah the weather sucked, but how often do you get to see a game from this vantage point? How often do you get to see the Cubs in first place?
We were at the Skybox which is right down the right field line, next to the Miller Lite billboard. The view was a lot better than I expected. Hopefully I can figure out how to get the pictures off my phone but if not, you can see some from the website. You get a great view of the whole stadium except for the warning track in right. It was also a little hard to pick up balls off the bat, especially fly balls to left, but other than that the seats were great, the food was pretty good and the beer was free.
Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures, like I said I took them on my phone. I’m not sure why the one is so much bigger than the other two. I’m fairly competent technically, but never really tried to learn how to use my phone.
I watched a few innings at a time in between the rain, and then just hung out by the pool table with the rest of my coworkers. The setup was nice. On the third floor of the building they had a pool table, and bar area, with some food and windows which could just barely see over the expanded bleachers. On the roof was a grill and some risers underneath another story of bleachers from where the view was incredible, as you can sort of see in the above pictures. Of the other rooftops I could see, I think this one was best in terms of seating a view of the park.
We left in the seventh or eighth inning when they put the tarp back on and also stopped serving alcohol. From there we went to the Cubby Bear which I wasn’t too excited about because I expected it to be packed, and who wants to stand shoulder to shoulder in a bar for hours listening to incredibly loud music while watching your drunken idiot single friends try to pick up cardinals chicks? Ok, actually that last part was funny. And the place wasn’t nearly as crowded as I feared, as we were able to stake out a nice section near the bar.
Speaking of Cardinal fans, there were a lot of them around. I know a lot of people come up from St. Louis for this series, but I wasn’t expecting nearly this many. There was way too much red in the stands and surrounding neighborhood.
I ended up crashing at a friends house because I was absolutely no shape to go home after the amount of Old Style I had consumed. As another friend said that weekend. “My liver is weepy”.
All in all it was a good time, and I’d like to go back with just baseball fans so we can actually watch the game rather then just get hammered, but what can you do?
