Don’t Trade Jones
By Mike | August 11, 2007
Nothing like a trip to Colorado to cure your hitting woes. Amazingly the Cubs pitchers have been able to more or less shut down the Rockies’ high powered offense at the same time.
With the absence of Soriano and Ramirez these last few days, now is the time when we need Jacque Jones to pick up the slack. And he’s starting to do it. He’s gotten his average all the way up to 266, which doesn’t sound like much, but considering where it came from, means he has been on a tear lately.
The Cubs have claimed Shannon Stewart and Scott Podsednik off waivers and have a few days to work out a trade with the A’s or Sox. I hope they don’t pick up either, unless they can do it for cash only. The Cubs have plenty of outfielders that are as good or better than both Stewart and Pods at the moment. Everyone panicked when the Cubs started losing again after Soriano went down, but the solution is not to trade for another average outfielder. The Cubs have a plethora of those.
Until Ramirez returns, and to be honest, probably afterwards as well, Jones needs to be in every day. Once Aramis is back deRosa will move back to second base primarily and he can play right on days when Lou want to get Fontenot or Cedeno in.
I know people, myself included have been clamoring for a Jones trade all year, but now is not the time. If he starts getting hot now, as he seems to be doing, and did last year he will be an invaluable contribution to the Cubs’ playoff push. I hope he stays.
