    The Sky is Falling

    By Mike | August 6, 2007

A few months ago, when the Cubs were just starting their amazing run I cautioned people not to get too excited.  I thought they would get within a few games of 500 or maybe to within shouting distance of the Brewers, and then just when we got our hopes up they’d go on one of their patented losing streaks.

I was wrong.  They made it to 500, and just kept on going, before finally catching Milwaukee last week.  In fact, based on the Cubs recent play, and the Brewers struggles, I recently told my White Sox loving friend that barring injury, I was 100% confident the Cubs would make the playoffs.

And that’s when it happened.  A few Days later Soriano goes down with an injury that will take him out 2-4 weeks, or maybe even more.  Now I’m about 25% confident the Cubs will make the playoffs.  I expected them to hang with the Brewers for a week or two before pulling away for good by the end of the month.  Now I’m just hoping they can hang on to make it a rest in the end of September.

I think the Cubs are better equipped to handle missing time by one of missing one of their stars than any other team.  Having DeRosa able to play just about any position and a plethora of outfielders that can play all three positions should help make up for the loss of Soriano’s production.    Maybe Theriot will do such a good job leading off that they can bat Soriano fifth where he belongs once he returns.

I haven’t hit the panic button yet, but I’ve got a really itchy trigger finger, and if they start dropping games I’m going to be in a real bad mood.
