    Cubs Thoughts

    By Mike | June 9, 2007

So once again I haven’t posted in quite a while. I have good excuses though. I’ve been on vacation, and very busy at work, and I’ve honestly been been too frustrated and angry with Cubs to write anything. Plus I’m lazy.

I’ve changed my opinions of Michael Barret, Jacque Jones and Carlos Zambrano. I thought Jones had a bad rap last year. He started poorly but ended up putting up some decent numbers. I figured he just got off to a slow start in his first year and that maybe he’d turn it around. Moises Alou had a horrible first year here before a few good years. But no. Jones is human rally killer. You’d rather have anyone else on the roster at bat in an important situation than Jones. That includes everyone from the pitchers to the bat boys.

I was a big Barret fan coming into this year. I thought he was solid on offense and that so called game calling abilities were insignificant. I didn’t put much weight in that stat. After the Zambrano fight fiasco I’ve changed my mind. He doesn’t think before he does anything. I can’t remember a recent game in which he hasn’t made a ridiculous error or a completely boneheaded base running mistake that cost the Cubs an out. Or both. Having him in the game is almost more detrimental than sitting him. Trade him to the Brewers. Maybe he can blow some games there.

And finally Zambrano. Earlier this year I was advocating signing him at any cost. Now I’m not so sure. If he’s going to be a complete mental case for the rest of his career, maybe the Cubs should trade him before now when they can still get something for him. He may still end up becoming one of the all-time great pitchers, but it may not be worth the risk.
