Zambrano and Contracts
By Mike | May 12, 2007
Did Carlos Zambrano forget that this is his contract year? Aren’t players in the final years of their contracts supposed to have career years so they can sign exceptionally large deals that they never live up to? Maybe someone should clue Carlos into that fact because he isn’t doing a lot to help his cause these days. I’m sure most teams would still be happy to sign him, but he’s not quite putting up the Cy Young numbers that he promised and many of us expected. If you had told me coming into the season that Big Z would be the Cub’s fourth best pitcher I’d have assumed they would already be ten games under .500. Give it a week and maybe I’d be right.

That last win streak was nice, but not very comforting. Beating up on the Pirates and Nationals is what any halfway decent team should do, and still the Cubs found ways to lose three games that they easily could have won to the Pirates. And the only reason they beat the Nat’s is because Washington gave the game away. There aren’t too many teams that are going to walk in three runners in an inning. Other than the Cubs of course.

I still don’t understand why the Cubs aren’t winning more. Granted I haven’t seen as many games as I’d like so maybe there is some explanation that I’m missing, but on paper they should be winning more. Their linup looks quite formidable, and their pitching has actaully been quite good. What’s the problem? It seems like they still can’t get clutch hits, but are they that much worse in that area than other teams? Apparently so.
