    Turning Point

    By Mike | May 2, 2007

I know its cliche, but Tuesday’s game could end up being a major turning for the Cubs season.  They had arrived in Pittsburgh on a three game winning streak and series victory off the Cardinals.  Their ace had finally pitched a good game, and their offense was starting to heat up. And they got to face the Pirates for three games.  I don’t think they’ve had a winning season since the fall of Communism in the Soviet Union.  They even had Rich Hill going in the first game, which almost ensured another win.

But then the Cubs of old showed up, scoring only two runs for Hill, one of which he drove in himself in a losing effort.  And then the next day their second most reliable pitcher so far this year has a shaky game giving up five runs early and it looks like the Cubs are doomed to mediocrity yet again.

Then an amazing thing happened.  They actually rallied late to take a 6-5 lead just before the rain set in.  The game is postponed until today, but they ultimately hang on to win it, as well as their regularly scheduled game.  So now instead of losing a series In Pittsburgh and sinking even further below .500 they’ve won five of their last six and could be on a roll.  And the offense is actually starting to play as advertised.

Soriano got his average past 300, as has Theriot, and Lee follows them with a 400+ batting average.  If they keep that up I’ll be looking to buy playoff tickets in a few months.

So we’ll see.  If they keep winning look back at this series as  a real momentum builder.  If not, well welcome to cubdom.
