    Misc Notes

    By Mike | April 28, 2007

I’m a few days late on this, but if you had April 25th in your office pool as the day Mark Prior would be officially done for the season, congratulations. You win.

    ————-

I have to admit I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the performance of the Cubs starting staff this year. The fact that Zambrano is the weak link amongst Lilly, Hill and Marquis is a good sign I would think, although I don’t know how many more times I can listen to Lou Piniella say that he takes solace in the fact that last year Z didn’t win any games in April.

Speaking of things I’m sick of hearing, I’m sick of hearing about how the Cubs are going to hit and its going to be exciting to watch when they do. All I know is its frustrating to watch them not hit right now, and if they aren’t careful its not going to matter how much they hit if and when they do hit because they’ll be too far out of the race to matter. Oh wait. This is the NL central. Maybe they’ll never be too far out. But still. You get my my point.

Did I see Theriot starting at SS yesterday? I hope that continues because I’d much rather have his 300+ batting average in the two hole than Izturis’s sub 200.

I caught the end of last nights game when Dempster came in for the final two outs in the eighth, and Brenly or Kasper made a comment that Piniella was playing the game as if it was a must win. Shouldn’t all the games be played like that? I guess the exception is when your attempt to win today kills your bullpen and costs you multiple games tomorrow, but how do you that will be the case? Your started could pitch a compete game, or it could be a blowout. You should play manage as if every game is a must win. Worry about tomorrow’s game tomorrow. Don’t blow today’s in the hopes that tomorrow’s will work out as planned.
