S.S.D.Y. Same shit, Different Year.
Hey look, only one day into the season, and the Cubs are already in last place!
In all fairness, I didn’t get to watch the game today, I just saw the boxscore so maybe they actually played well and it was just one of those days, but I don’t think so. Here’s what I see:
Carlos Zambrano should not be allowed to pitch on opening day. I don’t think he has made it past the fifth inning in any of his opening day starts. At least this time, he didn’t get ejected, he got pulled the old fashioned way, he stunk. Five walks in Five innings is not a formula for a cy young winning season. I’m not knocking Zambrano. I hope the Cubs give him as much money as it takes to lock him up for a long term deal, but pitching on opening day is not his thing. Give him a day or two to let the season sink in, then pitch him.
Offensively the box score looks disturbingly familiar. They seemed to get a fair amount of hits but can’t seem to string them together to generate runs. 8 hits and 8 players left in scoring position isn’t going to set any scoring records.
On the plus side Adam Dunn is on my HR Derby team, so his two homers are good for me. If the Cubs are going to lose, I might as well get paid, right?

Lots of people are picking the Cards to win the division again. Perhaps I’m drinking too much of the Cubbie Kool Aid, but I think they should run away with this division. I don’t see the Cards doing anything. Sooner or later that has to be true right?

In case you haven’t heard the Tribune Co. has been sold, and the buyer plans to sell off the Cubs. What I wouldn’t give to see Mark Cuban in running for new owner. I wonder if Steve Stone’s group has any interest. That would be funny after what happened to him and Chip a few years ago.

Sign Zambrano now dammit. He’s the only decent reliable pitcher you’ve had for years. Sign him. Give him an extra million or two. It might seem like a lot now, but in five years when you’re paying what you think is too much for him, it will probably be under the average pitcher salary. Sign him.
