Dancin’ Illini
By Mike | March 10, 2007
Like most people, I love rooting for the underdogs this time of year. The more bubble busters in the tournament the better. There’s nothing so great in sports as watching some tiny little school that no one’s heard of out of some tiny conference upset one of the cocky high seeded juggernauts.
Except this year, those underdogs were potentially taking the Illini’s spot in the dance. Every time a lock for the tourney would get knocked out of its conference tournament some potential Cinderella story would steal that conference’s automatic bid, which means one less out there for the Illini.
Fortunately Illinois beat Indiana in overtime in the Big 10 Tournament last night, which all the experts claim should cement their status as participants in the big dance. Of course they’ll be lucky to win a game there, but stranger things have happened.
