    Zambrano Contract

    By Mike | March 3, 2007

Have the Cubs signed Zambrano to a long term deal yet? I know they agreed to a contract for this year, but haven’t heard anything about upcoming years.

Personally I don’t see how the Cubs can give him anything less than what he is asking for. We’ve all been reliant on Wood and Prior the last few years, and Zambrano has just been an afterthought, our #3 guy, nothing to get excited about. Meanwhile he’s been the only consistent pitcher the Cubs have had in the last few years. Unless you give Wood credit for consistently being on the DL.

On any other team, I Zambrano wins the Cy Young award last year. He had almost 25% of the Cubs wins last year. Are you telling me that on a halfway decent team he wouldn’t have had three or four more wins and run away with run away with that title?

One reason I’ve heard on a local sports talk show for not giving Z a long term deal is that they are concerned that he won’t last more than three or four years, that he’s due for either a mental or physical breakdown, so they don’t wan to commit to the seven that he was asking for. To me that’s lunacy. You overpaid for a number of players this year how can you not worry about overpaying for one of the few consistently solid players that you’ve had in recent years?

Sign him. Sign him now. Sign him for whatever he’s asking for, and be thankful he isn’t already planning on going to the Yankees.
