    SuperBowl predictions

    By Mike | February 2, 2008

Am I allowed to say Superbowl?  Too late now I guess.

I’m going to go way out on a limb at pick the Patriots to win this one.    I’ve been picking the Giants to lose since halfway through the regular season, and this time I’m finally going to be right.

I’m actually rooting for the Patriots which is weird because I normally despise dynastylike teams.  The Yankees for example.  I used to root for the Red Sox but now that they’ve won a couple World Series, I wouldn’t mind seeing them with a last place finish or two.  Or maybe second to last so the Yankees can finish last.

The Patriots don’t bother me for some reason.  Maybe its because they are more team oriented and not as  showboaty as other teams.  Or because they seem to play a completely different style each weak, always outsmarting their opponents.  Or maybe I just want them to go undefeated to shut the ‘72 Dolphins up.  Have I ever mentioned how much I hate the Dolphins?

Anyway, I’m one of the few hoping that the Pats win.  The best part about this year’s Superbowl isn’t going to be the game, or the commercials.  It’s going to be the halftime show.  Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is my all time favorite band and I’m pretty excited that they got picked to sing at halftime.  I’m probably going to be the only one that cares.

    Go Pats.

    NFL Playoffs

    By Mike | January 14, 2008

The home teams should have been worried on Sunday after seeing that I picked the games on Saturday correctly.  It would have gone against the laws of the universe for me to be over 500.  So the Colts had to lose, which wouldn’t have surprised except that it was their practice team that did it, and the Cowboys had to lose, which completely shocked me.

I watched bits and pieces of each game, but I didn’t see any of them in their entirety.  What happened in Green Bay?  Seattle jumps out to a lead then get destroyed?

The Pats did what the Pats do, and should easily roll to the Superbowl, especially if none of the Chargers stars are active.  The only thing that might save the Chargers is that if I remember correctly, last year the Pats taunted them good after beating them in the playoffs.  Maybe their quest for revenge will save them.

On the other side, the Cowboys aren’t going to the Superbowl, which I like because Dallas annoys me, always has always will. The Cowboys loss is the Packer’s gain as now they will now be representing the NFC in the Superbowl, which I am not exactly thrilled by.  Maybe if the Pack loses in the Superbowl the “loser of the superbowl curse” will take them down for next year.  Which would be nice because the last thing the Bears need is a good team in Green Bay.

So to recap my predictions.  Patriots over the Packers in the Supberbowl.

    NFL Divisional Playoffs

    By Mike | January 11, 2008

Allright.  I was 2-2 in the wildcard playoffs, although the Chargers certainly had me worried.   I watched bits and pieces of each game, but didn’t see any of them in their entirety.  I’m still shocked the Giants pulled that one out, and I really thought the Steelers could hold off the Jag.s.   But that’s what happens in the playoffs I guess.  Lets see how my Divisional playoffs go.

    AFC

Jacksonville Jaguars at New England Patriots.  I have a feeling that Jacksonville is going to pull off a monster upset in this one, but I still can’t pick against the Patriots.

San Diego Chargers at Indianapolis Colts. One of my friends grew up in San Diego and is still a fan, so for his sake I want to pick them to win, but I just don’t see it happening.  especially in Indy.  This will be a close one, but Indy will pull it out in the end.

     NFC

Seattle Seahawks at Green Bay Packers.  I have a really sick feeling that the Packers are going to go to the Superbowl.   The Seahawks will give them a good game, but Favre is going to be able rally for the win.

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys.   With or without T.O. the cowboys will destroy the Giants.  This is the one game I am confident in my pick, which probably means it will be the one  game that results in an upset.   Oh well. I’ll take 3-4.

    Slacker

    By Mike | January 4, 2008

Not that anyone’s noticed, but I’ve been a slacker and haven’t posted my picks for the last two weeks of the NFL season. I haven’t even posted my results from week 14.  I could have been perfect that week and we may never know.

I stopped picking because I kept running out of time during the holidays and those Thursday games kept throwing me off.

But football isn’t all I’ve neglected.  I also fully intended to write about Fukadome, the Mitchell report, Brian Roberts, Roger Clemens, The Bears end of the season, the Rose Bowl, and who knows what else, and yet, I managed to write nothing.  Fear not.  That ends here.  I will now make my official picks for the NFL playoffs, which most likely means I’m picking teams that will be watching from home next week.    I’m going to just pick wins and losses and not worry about the spread.    This is the post season and winning is all that matters.

    NFC

New York Giants at Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  The Giants have been rather flaky in recent years, especially in the second half of the season.  I’m not sure how Plexico is feeling, but I do know they’ll be without Shockey.  I did follow the Bucs much this year, but I’m taking them none the less.  I have a feeling we see a typical Eli meltdown in this one.

Washington Redskins at Seattle Seahawks.  The Redskins have had quite a remarkable run, but it ends here.   I think that their emotions have allowed them to overachieve, but against Seattle in Seattle, I don’t think they can win on that alone.

    AFC

Jacksonville Jaguars at Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Steelers are without Willlie Parker, and most of the experts seem to be picking against them, but I think they grind out a win at home.  Then again I’ve been betting against the Jaguars and losing all year.

Tennessee Titans at San Diego Chargers.  The Titans almost beat San Diego a few weeks ago, but there’s no way that happens this time around.  The Chargers will run away and hide with this one.

So there’s my first round predictions.  Hopefully I’ll remember to record my picks for round 2.

    Mike’s NFL Picks 2007 Week 15

    By Mike | December 15, 2007

Its been a busy week, and I already missed picking one game.  Have I mentioned how stupid I think the Thursday night games are?  They need to get rid of them.  If there must be another day of football, put it on Saturday after the College season winds down.  I’d be more likely to watch that and get my picks in on time.

Anyway,  here are this weeks picks minus the Thursday night game.

Cincinnati Bengals -9 at San Francisco 49ers.  I’m going to go against my better judgment and take the Bengals minus the points here.  I’ve been very disappointed with Cincinnati this year, but San Fran is just terrible.  I don’t think they can score, nor can they stop Cinci’s offense.

Arizona Cardinals +4 at New Orleans Saints.   I’ll take the Saints.

Atlanta Falcons +13 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  What a horrible season for Atlanta.  Its not going to get any better this week.

Baltimore Ravens -4 at Miami Dolphins.  I’ll take the Ravens.  Only two more games to go until Miami’s ultimately pathetic season.  By the way, I really hate Miami.

Buffalo Bills +6 at Cleveland Browns.  I still don’t get the Bills.   My I’m biased because Dick Jauron is their coach.  It doesn’t look like I spelled his name right, but I’m not looking it up.  I’m also betting against his team and taking the Browns.

Green Bay Packers -8.5 at St. Louis Rams.  I hate to do it, but I’m going to take the Packers.

Jacksonville Jaguars +3.5 at Pittsburgh Steelers.  Steelers, although I have a feeling with my luck they’ll only win by three.

New York Jets +21 at New England Patriots.  All I’ve been hearing for the past couple of days is that  the snow storm is going to prevent the Pats from blowing out this game.   I don’t buy it.   They are going to try to embarrass the Jets and no amount of snow is going to stop that.  I’ll take New England minus 21.

Detroit Lions +11 at San Diego Chargers.  I think last week’s failure to hold a lead is going to deflate the Lions for the last two games and San Diego will crush them.

Philadelphia Eagles +11 at Dallas Cowboys.  The Cowboys will win this one, but the Eagles will be able to keep it within 11.  Take the Eagles plus the points.

Washington Redskins +5 at New York Giants.  The Giants have gotten lucky lately as they’ve been trying to pull their traditional second half choke, but their opponents aren’t letting them.  The Redskins will win this game straight up, but take the points since they’re offered.

Chicago Bears +11 at Minnesota Vikings.  Great.  The Bears get to be embarrassed on national TV again.  Woo-hoo.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Adrien Peterson’s points in this game are enough to cover the spread against the entire Bears team.  The only way the Bears come close in this game is if Hester returns two or three kicks for touchdowns, but I have a feeling Minnesota isn’t going to be kicking to him.  If the Bears can’t score with an average starting field position around the 40, why not just kick it out of bounds? There’s no need to give the Bears only weapon the ball.  Oh wait, I’m supposed to be making a pick, not explaining all the Bears failings.   Vikings minus 11.  If you had told me at the beginning of the season that would have been the spread I would have put my life savings on the Bears.   Shows what I know.

    NFL Week 14 Pick Results

    By Mike | December 15, 2007

Week 14 was not a great football week for me. The Bears lost as only they can, the only fantasy team in the first round of the playoffs that put up decent numbers was my opponent, and I went 7-9 in my picks bringing my total to 80-99-11. At this point I have as much chance of making it to 500 as the Bears do making it to the playoffs. Here’s how the picks looked:

Away Team Pts Spread Pts Home Team
    Chicago Bears 16 +3 24 Washington Redskins
    Carolina Panthers 6 +11 37 Jacksonville Jaguars
    Dallas Cowboys 28 -11.5 27 Detroit Lions
    Miami Dolphins 17 +7.5 38 Buffalo Bills
New York Giants 16 +3 13 Philadelphia Eagles
Oakland Raiders 7 +11 38 Green Bay Packers
San Diego Chargers 23 -1.5 17 Tennessee Titans
St. Louis Rams 10 +7 19 Cincinnati Bengals.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 14 -3 28 Houston Texans
    Arizona Cardinals 21 +7 42 Seattle Seahawks
    Minnesota Vikings 27 -9.5 7 San Francisco 49ers
Pittsburgh Steelers 13 +10.5 34 New England Patriots
Cleveland Browns 24 -3.5 18 New York Jets
Kansas City Chiefs 7 +7 41 Denver Broncos
    Indianapolis Colts 44 -10 20 Baltimore Ravens
New Orleans Saints 34 -3.5 14 Atlanta Falcons

    Mike’s NFL Picks 2007 Week 14b

    By Mike | December 8, 2007

I almost forgot to get the remainder of my picks in. Here goes:

Carolina Panthers +11 at Jacksonville Jaguars. 11 points is a lot to give for a Jaguar team who I don’t think has a very high powered offense, but the Panthers only have one offensive weapon in Steve Smith and he’s by shutting down their QB’s he’s been fairly ineffective recently, killing my fantasy team in the process. Jacksonville minus the 11.

Dallas Cowboys -11.5 at Detroit Lions. Another double digit spread, and again I’m going to take the favorite. I think Detroit will be forced to throw even more than normal and that will lead to turnovers and a blowout.

Miami Dolphins +7.5 at Buffalo Bills. I can’t figure the Bills out. I don’t know that I would lay 7.5 points against any other team, but Miami is really bad. The question is if Miami has given up or is going to go all out to avoid the 0-16 season. I’ll take Buffalo for the win, but they’ll fail to cover.

New York Giants +3 at Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants tried really hard to pull off their traditional second half choke job the last few weeks, just the Bears wouldn’t let them. The Eagles will be able to finish the job and win in convincing fashion. Philly minus the three.

Oakland Raiders +11 at Green Bay Packers. I’m going to assume that Favre is fine, but even if he isn’t the Packers should destroy the Raiders. I’ll take my third double digit favorite so far this week.

San Diego Chargers -1.5 at Tennessee Titans. The Chargers are another team that I don’t know what to expect from. I think they can take the Titans on the road though.

St. Louis Rams +7 at Cincinnati Bengals. I have to take the Rams here. They have been looking much better in recent weeks, and the Bengals are just awful.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers -3 at Houston Texans.   I’m flipping a coin on this one but I’ll take the Bucs and the three.

Arizona Cardinals +7 at Seattle Seahawks.  My fantasy season depends on Seattle scoring lots of points in this one, and I think that is what they are going to do.  I’ll the the Seahawks minus seven.

Minnesota Vikings -9.5 at San Francisco 49ers.  I think the Vikings are a lot better than anyone would have expected this year.   If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that I was going to lay 9.5 points to the Niners on the road I would have thought you were crazy, but since they are a decent team this year, and San Francisco is taking steps backwards, I’m going to have to take the Vikings.

Pittsburgh Steelers +10.5 at New England Patriots.  I’m surprised this is still such a huge spread.  The Patriots have looked mortal in the past few weeks, and there are a lot of people predicting the Pats first loss this week.  Maybe that is all the motivation they need to  get back to absolutely dominating form.  I think the New England will win, but it will be a closer game, like in the past few weeks, so for the first time in a long time I’m going to bet against the Patriots and take Pittsburgh plus the ten and a half.

Cleveland Browns -3.5 at New York Jets.  I don’t know how the Jets are only getting three and a half here.  I don’t think this game will be anywhere near that close.  If I was doing locks or best bets this would be it.

Kansas City Chiefs +7 at Denver Broncos.  The Broncos are completely unpredictable, sucking just when you think they are getting it together.  I’d normally take them without a second thought in this game, but I can’t do it.  Plus I hate them. Chiefs plus the seven, although don’t be surprised if they win straight up.

Indianapolis Colts -10 at Baltimore Ravens.  The Colts are good, but they don’t often blow teams out.  They do what it takes to win and don’t pile on.  The Ravens still a decent team and will at least be able to keep it with 10.  I’ll take the Ravens.

New Orleans Saints -3.5 at Atlanta Falcons.  I’ll take the Saints.

    NFL Week 13 Pick Results

    By Mike | December 8, 2007

I think last week was my best this year as I had a somewhat impressive 10-6. That brings my season total all the way up to 73-90-11. With a perfect week this week I can get to one game below .500.

Away Team Pts Spread Pts Home Team
Green Bay Packers 27 +7 37 Dallas Cowboys
    Atlanta Falcons 16 +3.5 28 St.Louis Rams
    Buffalo Bills 17 +6.5 16 Washington Redskins
    Detroit Lions 10 +4 42 Minnesota Vikings
    Houston Texans 29 +4 28 Tennessee Titans
    Jacksonville Jaguars 25 +7 28 Indianapolis Colts
New York Jets 40 +1 13 Miami Dolphins
San Diego Chargers 24 -6.5 10 Kansas City Chiefs
    Seattle Seahawks 28 +3 24 Philadelphia Eagles
    San Francisco 49ers 14 +3 31 Carolina Panthers
    Cleveland Browns 21 -1 27 Arizona Cardinals
    Denver Broncos 20 -4 34 Oakland Raiders
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27 +3.5 23 New Orleans Saints
New York Giants 21 -2 16 Chicago Bears
    Cincinnati Bengals 10 +7 24 Pittsburgh Steelers
New England Patriots 27 -21 24 Baltimore Ravens

    Bears Notes

    By Mike | December 8, 2007

Six penalties on one offensive drive including two false starts and a delay of game after they were inside the Washington 10 yard line?  Frankly I’m amazed they held the ball long enough to amass that many penalties, but you aren’t going to win games that way.

When is the last time the Bears defense made a stop in the fourth quarter?  Its to the point where a giving up a field goal is considered a win.   How about a stop?  Or better yet a three and out?

On he plus side, it was nice to see Hester involved as a receiver.  He had some nice plays on their drive in the fourth quarter.  If they can keep getting the ball sooner or later  he will break a tackle and take one to the house.

I’ve been pretty disappointed with  Berrian this year, but made a couple of great catches including the one for the TD.

Are we going to see Orton next week?   I hope so.  I’m not a Griese fan.

    Mike’s NFL Picks 2007 Week 14a

    By Mike | December 6, 2007

I still haven’t tallied up my results from last week and here I am having to make an early pick this week.  Stupid Thursday games.  Only one game to pick so far though and its the Bears, so you know where I’m going with this one

Chicago Bears +3 at Washington Redskins - The Bears have been winning every other game this year, so its is their turn to win this week, and if it was any team other than the Bears going against the Skins this week I’d take them, but I have faith in the Bears ability to find a way to lose.   In an effort to truly piss me off they’ll probably lose this game by two so that I get my pick wrong while the still fail to get a win.  Whatever.  Redskins minus the points.
